At his first inaugural address on March 4, 1801, Thomas Jefferson said, "A wise and frugal government... shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government." Why is this important? Because this is the view I will bring to city government here in Calera, Alabama, if you elect me for city council.I share the views of our founding fathers of limited government. That means limited taxation, and limited regulation. I believe it is the duty of government to secure rights, NOT to grant them. If elected, I will not support any ordinance or policy, that goes beyond the scope of these ideas.
As a councilman, I would like to:
1. Create a website informing the citizens of Calera (in layman's terms) what its city government is doing. I would also like to educate through this site how current ordinances/policies, etc. are affecting our city.
2. Hold community classes on American history, basic economics, how to start a business, and the role of civil government. These classes would be free, and I would work with experts in these fields, to help educate our citizens in these areas.
Whenever you hear things like, "the city of Calera purchased," or "the city of Calera owes," insert the word "taxpayers" where the words, "city of Calera" appear. No government has resources (including money) that it earned. Government either has to tax the citizens for it, or borrow it (which eventually leads to heavier taxation).
Also, government cannot create prosperity. Only the free market can. The government provides a context under which the market can operate.
As councilman, I will seek to influence the city toward financial independence, lower taxes, and less regulation. As councilman, I will support our local police deparment, because it is the most important role of government to protect the individual rights of its citizens, and by individual rights, that includes property rights as well.
I hope that you will consider supporting me for Calera city council District #5 in this year's election. Be sure to come out and vote August, 26th!
